President Jammeh calls for durable solution to sahelian crisis

Friday, September 27, 2013

The president of the Republic has called for a durable solution to the crisis gripping the Sahelian region, while renewing his landmark call for a “decade of peace and reconciliation in Africa”.

His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh was addressing multitude of high-ranking politicians and development partners Thursday during the opening of a high-level meeting on Sahel, organised on the fringes of the ongoing 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Gambian leader stressed the need for collective efforts in the Sahel region of Africa so as to address all the aspects of the various crises. “We must equally address all the aspects of the crises in the region through such a platform that convenes, as and when necessary, under the leadership of the United Nations.  It is my humble view that an annual forum that brings together the countries of the region and all stakeholders including regional and international organisations would go a long way in forging a strong partnership for the Sahel,” he stressed.

BANTABA:- A fleeting look at tourism development; a key contributor to Gambia’s economy

Friday, September 27, 2013

The Gambia has for many years now been a choice for thousands of European and other tourists due to many outstanding factors apart from its peaceful nature that continued to be admired as well as its proximity to Europe. It is apparent that the country’s endowed resources such as the sun, sand, beach, wetland environment and species amongst others, couple with the historical sites like the Stone Circle, Fort Bullen, the James Island now Kunta Kinteh Island and so on remain key attractions for travel and tourism in the country.

This very sector, the second highest earner of foreign exchange apart from agriculture, has been a key enabler in the socio-economic development of the present day Gambia, contributing approximately 16 percent of the GDP.

As Yahya Jammeh’s erratic nature has been ushering our country through
mirages, uncertainty and incompetence no one should be surprised to
see these crumbling institutions. One of the worst areas under the
Jammeh regime is the health sector. Access to primary health care
instead of being a priority for the government has been pushed to the
edge.

The Gambia: The erudite Dr Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe comes out swinging on way forward

Former Gambian foreign minister Dr Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe

It seemed as much an expression of frustration as it was of concern. But Dr. Momodou Lamin Sedat Jobe was adamant. “If this struggle is to make any progress we need leadership,” says the former director of UNESCO’s division of culture and erstwhile Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs under the regime of Yahya Jammeh. Dr. Jobe’s statement came on the heels of the recently established Raleign Steering Committee and Omar Jallow’s (OJ) much publicized rejection of any portfolio in the Steering Committee as constituted. But that is only part of the story. Dr Jobe, while praising both the rationale for Raleigh and the event itself, is equally concerned about the possible proliferation of even more organizations. The central point of Dr Sedat Jobe’s argument concerns the emergence of new organizations, yet his specific focus is on how Gambia can move forward, provides a breakthrough in preempting any possible future leadership impasse.

Gambia: As Schools Re-Open Poor Parents Are Roaming About for Assistance

Clarification Is Needed On How Free Is Free Education

A parent came to the Foroyaa Office with a bill amounting to 3500 dalasis to make enquiries whether the information being spread that government has introduced free education up to the high school level is true or not and further seek for assistance if the story is not true. This makes it urgent for the authorities to make government policy clear to the people. As far as we know free education for girls only affects fees to be paid in Government schools. The information delivered on political Party platform or during tours appears to be mere promises and not policies.
