A new group – The Gambia-Venezuela Friendship Association was officially launched Thursday as part of efforts to strengthen relations between Banjul and Caracas.

Hatched at the Venezuelan embassy in Kotu under the leadership of the new ambassador, His Excellency Eduardo Medina Rubio, the new Association is a composition of teachers and entrepreneurs, amongst others.

In his launching statement, Ambassador Rubio described the establishment of the link as important, expressing hope that the new group under the framework of respect and solidarity will consolidate the mutual cooperation between the two countries.

He used the opportunity to underscore the strides of their late president, Commander Chavez, whom he said led the struggle for a multi-polar world for participatory democracy and freedom of the people; and defence of the poor people, amongst others. He expressed hope that this group will live up to expectations, especially in strengthening relations between the two countries and their peoples.

A member of the Association, Buba Senghore, who is the assistant manager of the Bakoteh Fish Market, thanked the Venezuelan ambassador for what he described as a wonderful initiative. Underscoring that The Gambia is proud to be associated with its Latin American counterpart, Senghore assured of their commitment to work with the Embassy in strengthening the good relationship between Banjul and Caracas.
