The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) through its International Cooperation Development Fund (ICDF) Thursday donated second-hand health equipment to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for onward distribution to the Jammeh Foundation for Peace, Serrekunda and Basse health facilities.

The donated equipment that included infant incubators, obstetric diagnostic table, sphygmomanometers, nebulizers, ultraviolet ray sterilizers and others, were handed over to the Ministry by the Taiwanese ambassador to The Gambia, His Excellency Samuel Chen, and the secretary general of the ICDF, Tao Wen-lung.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the Embassy, Ambassador Chen acknowledged the strong bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and Taiwan, saying the donation manifests his country’s commitment to Gambia’s development endeavours. He said the donation was meant to help The Gambia government in its efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate in The country.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the permanent secretary, Matilda Bouy, expressed appreciation to the Taiwan ICDF through the embassy for its continued support to The Gambia.

PS Bouy described maternal and infant mortality as one of the key concerns of the government, saying the donation will immensely contribute in addressing these issues. “The Gambia and Taiwan share very strong bilateral relations and I wish it will continue to flourish,” she added.

The secretary general of the Taiwan ICDF, Tao Wen-lung, described the maternal health programme in Basse as “successful” so far, expressing hope that it will be expanded to other regions. He indicated that ICDF has also sent a public health volunteer to stay in the country for two years.

Other speakers were the deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dawda Ceesay and the director of Health Services, who described the donation as one of the many contributions the Asian island nation has made to The Gambia’s health sector.
