A fight ensued between Momodou Tangara, Gambia’s newly appointed Ambassador to the UN and Falai Baldeh, and Bakary Jarju, AKA Jalang both Gambian political activists. Tangara came out of the hotel, where Jammeh Musa is hosted and he started picking up a beef with Falai and Bax. What started as verbal words of confrontation later degenerated into a physical fight. Tangara was alleged to have first hit Mr. Falai Baldeh, who responded by beating the hell out of the Gambian envoy to the UN. Bakary Jarju, also another demonstrator later came to the aid of Falai. Bax singlehandedly tackled Yahya Jammeh’s personal driver before coming for Momodou Tangara. Tangara was knocked to the ground. Jammeh’s bodyguards later came to rescue Tangara. The guards were restrained by the Secret Service, when they wanted to pick up a fight with Falai and Bakary Jarju. Tangara quickly withdrew from the scene of the incident.
Police later showed up and wanted to arrest Falai Baldeh and Bakary Jarju . Both Falai and Jarju were about to be handcuffed by the New York PD officers dispatched to the scene. But according to Saihou Mballow, he saved Falai and Bakary Jarju from being arrested. Mballow said he told the officers that a lawsuit awaits them if they ever arrest Falai and Bakary Jarju—arguing that Ambassador Momodou Tangara provoked the two by physically assaulting them.
“I told the officers that Falai and Bakary have not broken any laws. I witnessed the incident. It was Momodou Tangara, who was accompanied by Batata Juwara, and others, who first assaulted Falai Baldeh. I saw him hitting Falai. Falai responded by employing self defence. Bakary Jarju too was attacked by Jammeh’s driver. It was a serious fight. The officers left without arresting anyone,” Saihou Mballow tells Freedom Radio.
Speaking to this paper, Falai Baldeh, in a rather joyous mood said: “I am a happy man today. Even if I happen to die today, I will die as a happy man. I have adequately represented my country and her people here in New York. I beat the hell out of Ambassador Momodou Tangara. He came here and started provoking us. A fight later ensued between Tangara and myself. He got the taste of his medicine. I was able to drop him to the ground,” Mr. Baldeh said.
Mr. Baldeh said some officers of the NY PD wanted to arrest him alongside with Bakary Jarju, but thanks to Saihou Mballow the arrest was averted. He said he told the police that he was first assaulted by Ambassador Momodou Tangara, who smacked him on his face.
Ambassador Momodou Tangara was recently appointed to head the Gambian mission at the UN. He has served in different Ministries in Jammeh’s regime. He last area of assignment was the Ministry of Higher Education. He was fired during a recent cabinet reshuffle.
According to Falai Baldeh, he has been under the Secret Service’s radar since Yahya Jammeh’s arrival in New York. Baldeh said he was approached by an agent of the Secret Service at the Carlton Hotel under the suspicion that he was carrying a gun. Baldeh said he was searched, but no gun was found in his possession.
“I had a military backpack with me and they thought that I had a gun concealed in the bag. No one is armed in our group. We are here to protest against the dictatorship in the Gambia. I don’t mind going to jail, but no one will deny me my constitutional right to free speech and assembly,” Falai Baldeh said.
For his part, Bakary Jarju said, Momodou Tangara provoked the fight. Bax told Freedom Radio that they stood their ground by fighting with Tangara heads on.
“We beat the hell out of Tangara. He came out of the hotel and started provoking us.... He has gotten what he wanted. The police came in and wanted to process us. Saihou Mballow stood by us and the arrest was foiled. Tangara who started the trouble ran back to the hotel,” said Mr. Jarju.
Meanwhile, Saihou Mballow said he is going to consult with his lawyers to see if a lawsuit could be instituted against Momodou Tangara. Mballow said he is not going to leave the matter to die down like that. He vows to pursue Tangara legally in US Federal court.
Due to the poor public turnout at the hotel, Jammeh Musa was able to make it to the UN. He was placed in a waiting police vehicle and escorted to the UN. Falai Baldeh, Bakary Jarju, Ebrima Ndure, Assan Martin and others chanted anti Jammeh sentiments while Jammeh was walking out of the hotel under tight security escort. Falai Baldeh repeatedly cursed out Jammeh Musa's mother!
