The president of the Republic has reiterated his condemnation of what he referred to as “so-called Islamic militants or extremists” who hide behind the noble religion of Islam to engage in the killings of people, especially innocent Muslims, stressing the need for all to stand against the phenomenon.

His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh was speaking to journalists in an interview Saturday morning at the Banjul International Airport shortly after returning from the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Gambian leader and delegation were received on arrival at the foot of the aircraft by the vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy, the speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Abdoulie Bojang; the chief justice, Cabinet ministers, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, managing directors and a cross-section of the Gambian community.

“These so-called Islamic militants or terrorists groups have killed more Muslims than non-Muslims. These are the people who are giving Islam a bad name. They are criminals working for anti-Islamic forces and all Muslims including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) should stand up to fight and get rid of them,” he said.

Sahelian crisis

The Gambian leader also reiterated that his country is committed to the fight against crises in the Sahel region. He however stressed that The Gambia alone cannot end the crises, calling for greater commitment from all the parties. “To address anything that is evil in the region,” he said, “all the states must be committed, sincere and honest to one another”.

“So it is not the little Gambia to wipe out the crimes in the Sahel region single-handedly. The reason why it is difficult to end the crimes is because states are part and parcel of the crimes and they enjoy it,” he stressed.

The president observed that there are people and states that condone and encourage “criminals for their own benefits” in that they are serving “evil forces that are fighting against Islam”.

Renewed stance against same sex marriage

“So look at that, the journalist insults the prophet of the Almighty Allah and that is freedom of expression, but he denies the holocaust and he goes to jail. You wear the veil, you go to jail; a man marries a man, you are applauded, and they said that is human right. Those types of evil satanic rights will not be tolerated,” he stressed, while renewing The Gambia’s stance against same sex marriage.

He warned that his country will never condone the practice of homosexuality, an act, he said, would be only encouraged by “devil worshipers”.  “In fact Islam, Christianity, Judaism and all the good religions on the earth have condemned homosexuality,” he stated.

He stressed that the so-called powers can encourage homosexuality in their countries and in their own compounds, but noted that it cannot be imposed on other countries.

“We are Muslims and good Christians and we will not entertain homosexuality. We are going to fight it tooth and nail. We will confront Satan anywhere from the sky to the deepest part of the ocean; we are not going to accept homosexuality,” he concluded.
