The speech delivered by the president of the Republic at the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in which he renewed his call for the economic embargo on Havana to be lifted, has been welcomed by members of The Gambia-Cuba Friendship Association. The Association described the move by His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh as a stately one, concurring that the “so-called” embargo has since been taking its negative toll on the people of that Latin American nation.
The vice chairman of the Association, Buba Senghore, condemned the embargo, saying that it has violated the “basic human rights tenets of the UN Charter against the Cuban people”.
Praising Jammeh for a landmark speech and for denouncing Western double standards, he praised the Republic of Cuba for extending a helping hand to Gambian youths through the government.
He said his organisation that has been a friend to Cuba for many years now is deeply appreciative of the assistance being rendered to The Gambia through the leadership of President Jammeh. He cited scholarships to young Gambians, medical programme and support to the University of The Gambia (UTG) Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences as manifestations of Cuba’s commitment to the development of its West African ally.
“All the members of The Gambia-Cuban Friendship Association are appreciative of President Jammeh’s speech on Cuba. We need to give full support to the Cuban people in whatever ways to see to it that the UN recognises them as a sovereign state,” Senghore added.
“My Association therefore joins The Gambian leader in condemning the unfair treatment meted out to the Cuban people by the so-called superpower nations,” he added.
The Gambia-Cuba Friendship Association president used the opportunity to call on other African leaders to emulate the Gambian leader’s stance against “unfair treatment” of Cuba, describing it as unjustifiable.
