Four men currently under custody for their involvement in a political asylum scam Wednesday afternoon confessed to their crimes before journalists, using the opportunity to appeal for clemency from the president of the Republic.Gambian intelligence operatives, it would be recalled, had on Tuesday uncovered a huge political asylum scam involving a senior executive member of the main opposition party - the United Democratic Party (UDP) and three others.
The UDP national treasurer, Amadou Sanneh; Malang Fatty, the alleged asylum seeker; Alhagie Sambou Fatty, (brother to Malang); and Bakary Baldeh, commissioner of Oaths, all confessed to the crime. The men described their actions as “regrettable”.
The prime suspect, Malang Fatty, a native of Bantanto in the Central River Region, who was arrested by security agents at the Amdallai Border Post after being found in possession a “seditious attestation” against the state, said the bogus testimony contains information that strongly contravenes the Laws of The Gambia. Given this situation, he said he has now given up in his search for greener pasture, promising to stay in the country and work using his technical skills.
“It was my intention to travel abroad and each time I had a conversation with some of my friends who are already there, they will convince me to try an asylum document from one of the UDP members. I didn’t have any idea how to get an asylum document but later my brother, Alhagie Sambou Fatty, helped me through the UDP treasurer, Amadou Sanneh,” he explained.
Fatty said upon receiving the attestation, he tried to leave the country for Senegal, but unfortunately, he ran out of luck and was consequently apprehended at Amdallai Border Post where the alleged asylum attestation document was found in his possession. “When it was confiscated from me, I didn’t deny it contains information that contravenes the Laws of The Gambia. This was just a mistake and I hope the authorities, particularly President Jammeh would forgive me,” he said.
Concurring that people fabricate attestations that contain unfounded tales about their country, Fatty said he regrets his mistakes. He noted that he had never at any time been arrested by the Police, talk less of being intimidated, as alleged in the attestation. “This was just the work of the devil. I completely agree that we have broken the law and I promise that it will never happen again in my life.” He added.
The commissioner of Oaths, Bakary Baldeh, who sworn in and affixed his stamp on the alleged attestation document, claimed that he had cautioned the Fatty brothers that whatever was written in the said document was all lies. But he said Fatty was ceaseless with his appeal, which he (Baldeh) eventually succumbed to.
“This is the first time I engaged in this. It is just because Fatty is a neighbour. I totally regret doing this because it was meant to destroy the image of the country,” he added.
Baldeh said he knew Sambou Fatty just casually and that prior to this scam, he never had any personal interaction with him. He then called on people, especially his colleagues to desist from such acts.
On his part, Alhagie Sambou Fatty said he got involved in the scam because his brother desperately wanted to travel. He also appealed for clemency.
“This is already spilled water and cannot be retrieved. All what we can do is to beg for forgiveness,” he said.
Amadou Sanneh, for his part, said he was arrested because he prepared an asylum document for Malang Fatty. Sanneh, who was in tears, also made an appeal to the authorities for clemency.
