Monday, October 07, 2013The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Saturday afternoon received in audience at State House, the special envoy of His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan, president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The emissary, Nurudeen Mohammad, Foreign Minister of Nigeria, told waiting reporters shortly after his closed-door meeting with the Gambian leader that he was in Banjul to deliver a special message to the Gambian president from his Nigerian counterpart. Minister Mohammad described the meeting as successful, while highlighting the many shared values the two countries have.
“The two countries are strategic partners. We have shared values and history and of course rule of law, democracy and good governance and the history of sharing the same continent, culture people to people contacts, and contact at the highest level of leadership in the two countries too,” he said, noting that it is in that respect that the Nigerian president sent him to his Gambian counterpart and brother to convey on some issues of importance to both countries.
“He was very receptive. He has heard the message and listened to it and give us assurances of doing his best on those circumstances,” the Nigerian diplomat said of President Jammeh.
The Nigerian top diplomat used the opportunity on behalf of his people to express their appreciation to the Gambia’s support of their candidature in seeking a biennial non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for 2013-2014.
“The people of Nigeria are very grateful and this would further cement the already existing relationship between the two countries,” he further told journalists.
