The paramount chief (PC) of the Gambia, Alhaji Demba Sanyang, has said that groundnut production is a tool to enhance socio-economic development.

Chief  Sanyang was speaking to the Daily Observer on Tuesday at his 5-hectare groundnut farm in Lamin, Kombo North District. According to him, he is responding to the clarion call of the Gambian leader for people to ‘grow what they eat and eat what they grow’.

Alhaji Demba Sanyang praised the Almighty Allah for this year’s harvest as they delivered a bumper harvest. He thus thanked the president, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yaya AJJ Jammeh, for his initiative towards food self-sufficiency in The Gambia.

The paramount chief described President Jammeh as a dynamic leader who is concerned about the well-being and welfare of his citizens, which shows a clear manifestation of his leadership.

He stressed that farming is the only way forward to fight poverty and hunger; hence hailed President Jammeh’s initiative for people to ‘grow what you eat and eat what you grow’. He pointed out that after harvesting, the benefit still goes back to the populace.

PC Sanyang revealed that they are not only involved in groundnut cultivation but also rice amongst others. He further disclosed that the groundnuts that they harvested are always sold to the Gambia Groundnut Cooperation (GGC), which is a Gambian-based company formed by the government of The Gambia for the enhancement of groundnuts production in the country.  Kombo North, he said, has always played its part in the area of farming and other development areas.

Alhaji Demba Sanyang finally thanked all the communities that took part in the exercise, both men and women together with the youth.
