The new campus is designed in such a way that not only would it cater for both academic and extra-academic needs of the university, but it would be built into the future. 

Speaking at the occasion, the Gambian leader commended the Pan-African Consulting Engineering firm (PACE) for the good work and quickly gave his approval for the design. He expressed hope that the project would be completed within the five-year timeframe. Jammeh, also the chancellor of the UTG, spoke of his desire for the campus to be built in such a way that it will have all that is needed for a longer period before it will require adjustments. 

For the vice president and Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr, Isatou Njie-Saidy, President Jammeh should be commended for his strides over the years to create a knowledge-based society, an educated and highly skillful human capital to spearhead the national development endeavour.

The secretary general, head of the Civil Service and minister of Presidential Civil Service Affairs, Momodou Sabally, a product of the university himself, described the occasion as an emotional one. He went down memory lane to recall days gone by when cynics and pessimists described the idea of a university in The Gambia as premature and unrealistic. 

The Works, Transport and Infrastructure minister, Bala Garba Jahumpa, also joined previous speakers in thanking President Jammeh for building a university in The Gambia. He described the university project as a cornerstone of the July 22nd Revolution, the first and only one in several political generations.

The minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Fatou Lamin Faye, said the president had always wanted the best for Gambians and that education is no longer for the privileged few in the country. 

The permanent secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Cherno Omar Barry, also a product of the UTG, thanked the Gambian leader for the opportunity accorded him and others to attain university education at home. The UTG, he said, is producing world-class academic products, some of whom are manning key positions in the country. 

Also speaking at the ceremony, the vice chancellor of the UTG, Professor Mohammad Kah, joined speakers before him in thanking President Jammeh for his foresight in catering for now and for generations to come. 

Mohammed Ben Sallah of the Pan-African consulting engineering firm (PACE) said the design is world class and hoped it met the president’s expectation.
