The Banjul City Council (BCC) collected the sum of D50, 063.117 (fifty million and sixty-three thousand, one hundred and seventeen dalasis) in 2013, its Finance director has revealed.
Speaking while presenting a paper on the Council’s operations during the recently held first ever retreat of the Ministry of Lands and Regional Government at the Rural Development Institute (RDI) in Mansa Konko, Abdoulie Nyang described this as a significant improvement compared to previous years. He revealed that in 2012, the Council collected D46, 689, 166 (forty-six million, six hundred and eighty-nine thousand, one hundred and sixty-six dalasis); in 2011, the total revenue was D44, 720, 094 (forty-four million, seven hundred and twenty thousand, and ninety-four dalasis); whilst in 2010, it stood at just D35, 157, 884 (thirty-five million, one hundred and fifty-seven thousand, eight hundred and eighty
dalasis).
The Finance director informed that despite the fact that some gains have been registered in the area of revenue collection, however, there are still some challenges confronting the Council. Chief among this, he pointed out, is the untimely payment of rates and taxes, and the fact that The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has now taken over the collection of some of the revenues the Council used to amass.
Nyang said despite the inadequate financial resources at the Council, it is however managing to implement certain important development projects within the city.
The chief executive officer of BCC, Yusupha Manneh, informed that among the projects the Council is currently implementing are the fencing of Muslim and Christian cemeteries in Jeshwang; rehabilitation of drainage in the city; road reconstructions at the Bund Road, Box, Imam Omar Sowe Street, Rankin and Mantel; provision of plastic bins and the rebuilding of worn-out tractor trailers and engines.
Manneh also informed that the Council is taking drastic measures in the area of waste management, recalling that last year, it established an Anti-littering Unit in the quest to make Banjul one of the cleanest cities in the sub-region.
Manneh acknowledged that most of the gains registered by the Council were supported by the government, and thanked the latter for the interventions. He also acknowledged the support of their partners in the development of the city.
The CEO thanked the Ministry of Lands and Regional Government for organising the retreat, a forum he said, that would help the local government authorities to share experiences and learn from each other.
