South African university tops Times Higher Education’s inaugural Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings
The University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa, has topped Times Higher Education’s (THE) inaugural Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.
The public institution, more commonly known as Wits University, celebrated its centenary last year and has Nelson Mandela amongst its alumni and now becomes the first university to top THE’s innovative new ranking.
The second highest ranked university is University of Johannesburg in South Africa and in third place is Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, in Tanzania.
Four of the top 10 universities are from South Africa and two are from Tanzania.

Rich nations must do more to help Africa mitigate the devastating impacts of global warming and offer climate justice to the continent, the leader of AXIAN Group says.
‘’There’s a huge injustice, where the people who were polluting less are suffering the consequences of global warming,’’ AXIAN Group CEO Hassanein Hiridjee said. ‘’In Africa we see massive typhoons, massive drought, and massive warming. It’s time for the rest of the world to work with us to combat the crisis.’’

Broken Families, premiering on Sunday, 2 February 2014 on Al Jazeera English, follows Western Saharan community leader and activist Brahim Dahane as he seeks justice for his community against a range of abuses. Filmed over a six-month period, Dahane finds himself becoming the voice for the families whose sons or brothers have been arbitrarily imprisoned, secretly detained or disappeared, held without trial, tortured and ultimately tried by a Moroccan military court during peacetime.
The 25-minute documentary follows Dahane, a spokersperson for his Saharawi community, in his day-to-day life as he is caught up in one of the world’s longest-running and least-known conflicts, in Western Sahara, which has been occupied by Morocco since 1975.
