SG Sabally reaffirms gov’t’s support to legislative scrutiny -As 2013 Pre-session retreat opens in Albreda

The secretary general, head of the Civil Service and minister of Presidential Affairs has reaffirmed the Gambia government’s fullest support to the annual legislative scrutiny of Public Accounts and Public Enterprise Committees (PAC/PEC). 

 

Momodou Sabally was speaking Wednesday while presiding over the opening ceremony of the 2013 annual PAC/PEC pre-session retreat currently underway at the Kunta Kinteh Hotel in Albreda, North Bank Region (NBR).

Fatima Jabbe voted best female actress at Washington DC's African Oscars

Nollywood star Fatima Jabbe has been voted the best female actress at the African Oscars in Washington DC topping the list of 32 nominees in Africa People's Choice Best Actress category, say reports reaching What’s On.

 

 At the prestigious dinner held at the Warner Theatre in Washington over the weekend, Ms Jabbe picked the award ahead of other Nollywood superstars including the likes of Omotola Jalade, Monalisa Chinda, Queen Amina and Ify Hollywood. London-based Ms Jabbe has featured in numerous Nollywood films shot in the UK and was one of the stars of the recently-shown Shameful Deceit.

2 World leaders, others felicitate President Jammeh

The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya Jammeh, has continued to receive more congratulatory messages on the occasion of the country's 46th  Independence Anniversary celebrations. The latest messages came from Micheline Calmy-Ray, the president of the Swiss Confederation, and Juan Carlos R, the King of Spain. 

 

The messages read:
On the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of The Gambia, it is a special pleasure for me to convey to you and the Government and people of The Gambia the sincere congratulations of the Swiss Federal Council together with our best wishes for Gambia’s prosperity and well-being in the coming year.

‘only the military can end the carnage in africa’

The president and commander-in-chief of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has once again underscored the indispensable role of the military in Africa’s development and progress, stressing that the continent’s armed forces is the only institution that “can end the carnage in Africa”.

His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh was speaking Wednesday evening at State House in Banjul, while receiving a 21-man delegation of directing staff and students from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

Omar Khan back as URR governor

Friday, April 29, 2011Alhaji Omar Khan has confirmed to the Daily Observer that he was reinstated yesterday, April 28th, 2011, as governor of the Upper River Region (URR).

Governor Khan also reaffirmed his loyalty and support for President Jammeh as well as his commitment to the APRC.

Readers would recall that Khan was on Tuesday, April 26th, 2011, replaced by Kanimang Sanneh, a native of Jimara District, who is also a former chairman of the Basse Area Council.

Gambia News : Gambia rejects Alassane Ouattara as president of Ivory Coast

The Gambia said on Saturday that it does not recognize Alassane Ouattara as president of Cote d’Ivoire after the arrest of his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, with the help of the UN and French forces.

"The Gambian government will not recognize any president, President Ouattara included, nor African government that has been imposed by forces outside the African continent, no matter the reason," says the statement.

Bissau special envoy holds talks with President Jammeh

The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, Thursday afternoon held talks with the special envoy of the president of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, who paid a courtesy call on him at State House.

The special envoy, Retired Colonel Omar US Embalo, minister of State for African Affairs and International Cooperation of Guinea Bissau, told the State House press corps shortly after his closed-door meeting with President Jammeh, that he was sent to The Gambia by his president, His Excellency Malam Becai Sanha to deliver a special message to his Gambian counterpart. 

No room for eye service in the army President Jammeh tells newly promoted officers

The president of the Republic and commander-in-chief of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has warned that the ‘eye service syndrome’ in the army will not be tolerated, thus urging the officers to do their work with diligence, professionalism and a high sense of responsibility. 

His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh was speaking Wednesday afternoon at State House in Banjul while presiding over the piping and swearing-in ceremony of six officers of GAF who were recently promoted to various senior ranks in the army. The officers are Sulayman Badgie, Alhaji Martin and Bora Colley, elevated from the rank of colonel to Brigadier General; Umpah Mendy and Ousman Gomez, elevated from the rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel; and Solo Bojang and Ansumana Sanyang, elevated from the ranks of major and corporal to Lieutenant Colonel and Lieutenant respectively.  

Oceanic Bank briefs the press on liquidation

Oceanic Bank Gambia Limited, a subsidiary of its parent company in Nigeria which began winding up its operations in The Gambia on Tuesday 4th January 2011 following its failure to meet the Central Bank of the Gambia (CBG) minimum capital requirement of D150 million, Wednesday briefed the press on the bank's liquidation process which was completed recently. 

The briefing was held at the bank's head office along Kairaba Avenue.
